Office Chair Castors for Wooden Floors: The Complete Guide

Wooden floors and standard office chair castors have an abusive relationship, and the floor always loses. The hard nylon wheels fitted to most chairs were designed for carpet — on timber they scratch, scuff and, given a year or two, wear a matte grey patch right where you sit.

What to look for in a wood-safe castor

A soft tread. The castor's tyre should be softer than your floor. Polyurethane (PU) is the standard: it grips rather than skates, rolls quietly, and won't pick up grit and drag it across the boards the way hard nylon does.

Twin wheels. Two narrow wheels spread the chair's weight across more floor than one, reducing point pressure on soft timber like pine.

The right stem. Standard office chairs use an 11mm push-fit pin. Measure the metal stem on one of your existing castors — if it's 11mm across, replacements push straight in. (IKEA chairs use 10mm and need IKEA-specific parts.)
