Quick answer: nine times out of ten, an office chair squeaks from one of four places — the castors, the gas lift, the tilt mechanism under the seat, or plain loose bolts. Find the source first, then fix it. Oiling everything blindly just gives you a greasy chair that still squeaks.
Sit on the chair and move the way that triggers it. Then test each suspect on its own:
Flip the chair over and snug up every bolt you can see — seat fixings, mechanism plate, base. An Allen key and two minutes solve a remarkable number of "mystery" squeaks.
For metal-on-metal joints in the mechanism, use a silicone spray (not WD-40's standard formula, which cleans more than it lubricates, and certainly not the olive oil — we've heard things). Spray sparingly, work the joint, wipe the excess.
Castor bearings aren't serviceable — once they sing, they're done. A set of five soft PU castors is £8.99, pushes in without tools, and rolls near-silently — kinder to your floors, too. Not sure they'll fit? Nearly every chair uses the standard 11mm stem — here's how to check in ten seconds.
If leaning back sounds like a ship in a storm and lubricant only quiets it for a week, the mechanism's pivot points are worn. A replacement tilt & lock mechanism is £17.99 and bolts straight on — check your bolt spacing matches (150 × 255mm) or email us a photo and we'll confirm.
A squeak plus a lean, a sink or a wobble usually means the working parts under the seat are generally tired. Rather than chase each noise, our complete base refurbishment kit replaces the lot — base, gas lift, castors and mechanism — for £52.99, which is a fraction of a comparable new chair.
Can I use WD-40 on my office chair? The classic blue can is a water displacer, not a true lubricant — it often quiets a squeak for days, not months. Silicone spray or white lithium grease lasts far longer.
Why does my chair squeak more in winter? Cold contracts metal and dries out what little lubrication is left. Same parts, less forgiveness.
Do new castors really cut noise? Dramatically — especially soft polyurethane ones on hard floors. Hard nylon wheels rumble; PU whispers. Read more on saving your hardwood floor while you're at it.
Parts ordered before 11am go out the same working day, delivery is free to UK mainland, and if you're unsure what's squeaking, email a photo (or honestly, a video with sound) to info@chairoutlet.co.uk — we've diagnosed chairs by ear since 2006.
